Dental Sportsguards & mouthguards

Sportguards by Dr. Leo Townsend in Elk Grove, CASportsguards and mouthguards are flexible protective devices that are worn over the teeth to protect them from impact-related damage. Athletes typically wear mouthguards, or sportsguards, to avoid damage to their teeth from sports like football, baseball, and soccer. Mouthguards may also be worn to prevent bruxism, or teeth grinding, that can result in uneven surface wear and even tooth loss.

Are mouthguards comfortable?

Yes, mouthguards from a dentist are custom made, so they fit comfortably and provide the right protection for each person's needs and activities. Guards are available for all ages of patients and all types of activities.

Who should wear a mouthguard?

Any athlete of any age, from child athletes all the way up to seniors, can benefit from wearing a mouthguard during any athletic activity that could result in contact with the mouth or lower face. Mouthguards are especially important for young athletes

What is Under Armour Performance Mouthwear?

Under Armour Performance Mouthwear is designed to support the jaw and prevent teeth from clenching, a common “side effect” of athletic performance and competition. The design also pivots the jaw forward to relieve pressure on the jaw joints and to prevent energy-draining hormones from being released when the jaws are clenched.

Do over-the-counter mouthguards offer good protection?

Over-the-counter mouthguards are designed to suit general population needs, and not to provide custom protection based on a person's unique mouth shape or activity needs.

How should I care for my mouthguard?

Mouthguards generally can be cared for with regular cleaning with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste to keep them fresh and free of germs. Rinse well after cleaning and wipe the guard with a soft cloth. Guards should be kept in a container with openings for airflow when not in use. Some guards have different care instructions that are provided at purchase. Custom guards should be checked periodically by the dentist to ensure they fit well.
